In the opening game of the season the D-Backs purple squad set the tone for the season with a commanding win over the gray squad.
Jacob took the mound and quickly showed his dominance with a three pitch strikeout to start the game. The second batter hit a tapper back to the mound, but Jacob was able to make a snap throw to Tyrus at first for the second out. The third batter didn't fare any better going down swinging ending the inning with only nine pitches.
Cailen did what all good leadoff hitters do and tested the infield immediately with a bunt single and then promptly stole second on the next pitch. Mitchell struck out swinging and Cailen was able to get to third on a passed ball. Jacob then lumbered to the plate and hit an RBI ground out to short to allow Cailen to score the first run of the game. Joe then singled on a grounder to right field, but was left on base after Mario struck out.
The top of the second saw Jacob give up a soft grounder to third for a single and then followed that up by striking out the next two batters. After a passed ball and wild pitch the Gray put their first run on the board to tie it up at one apiece.
The second inning was huge with Tyrus leading off the inning with a line drive down the left field line for a single. Jackson attempted to bunt, but hit it a little too hard and Tyrus was put out running to second. Parker then struck out on a very low third strike for the second out. Brandon came to the plate and hit to right field just deep enough to allow Jackson to score from first to make it 2-1. Michael then reached first on a dropped third strike and then Cailen knocked in both Brandon and Michael on a double to right field. Mitchell made up for his early strikeout hitting a scorching line drive to left center for an RBI double. It was definitely into triples alley, but Mitchell decided to miss first base and had to run backwards to make it more interesting. Jacob kept the doubles coming with a nice hit to center scoring Mitchell to make it 6-1.
The third inning was not so exciting with both teams combining for five stikeouts and no runs.
Jacob finished his night on the hill in the fourth with two more strikeouts and no runs.
The bottom of the fourth saw singles from Brandon, Michael, Mitchell, and Joe with Jacob hitting his second double of the game. At the end of the inning the score showed 10-1 with purple well in control.
Cailen came on to pitch the fifth inning and wasted little time striking out the side.
Purple entered the bottom of the fifth needing only one run to seal the victory. Brandon walked and Michael was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a passed ball moved both runners up Cailen hit a line drive to center scoring Brandon and ending the game.
It was a dominant performance scattered with a few mental errors on the base paths. Easily fixable and giving the Purple D-Backs reason to be excited for the season.
