D-Backs vs Red Sox
W, 12-11
Luke Bowden shines in a back and forth game that ended in a walk off stolen base for a D-Backs win.
Red Sox first batter hit a sharp grounder to Rushton Shirts who had no problem scooping it up and throwing to Mason Biship at first for the out. Mitchell Houston then struck out the next batter looking at a called third strike. Five walks and a double later and Red Sox put up five runs. Mitchell ended the inning by striking out his second batter of the frame.
D-Backs responded quickly with Aiden working a walk and then scoring on a line drive triple by Luke deep into the left field corner. Ricky Whetten singled to the shortstop and Mason Biship took one for the team and was hit by a pitch taking a 43 MPH fastball between his shoulder blades. With Ricky and Mason on base this set the stage for Walker Cunningham. Walker walked to the plate slowly sizing up the Red Sox pitcher. After a few practice swings he stepped in. He swung at the first pitch...strike one. He swung at the next pitch...strike two. He stepped out of the box and composed himself ready for the next pitch. It was a ball and so was the next one. With the count 2-2 Walker took a fastball away and smoked it over the right fielder for a three run home run.
The Red Sox answered with a five more runs bringing the score to 10-5. D-Backs would not go quietly. Christopher Alston singled to the third baseman and Rushton Shirts and Jesse Groscost walked to load the bases. Luke now walked to the plate with his confidence soaring. He wasted no time hitting the first pitch past the center fielder to the wall. He galloped around the bases scoring all three D-Backs runners. Ricky was then beaned in the head on the next pitch causing the D-Backs players to clear their bench. They rushed the mound to vent their frustration with the Red Sox pitcher who was obviously retaliating for Lukes second triple of the game. Well this is what could have been, but the D-Backs players were still celebrating Lukes triple in the dugout and didn't even see the bean ball. Bench clearing brawl averted. With Ricky on first Mitchell followed the theme of the game by hitting a line drive to the center field wall. He rounded first, rounded second, rounded third and headed for home... but he missed third base and had to turn around holding for a triple. With two outs and the game tied Walker hit a swinging bunt to the pitcher and beat out the throw to score Mitchell from third. D-Backs took the lead into the final inning 11-10.
Luke walked the first batter and then gave up an RBI double to center tying the game. D-Backs stopped the rally as the next batter hit a towering fly ball behind the pitchers mound. Mitchell ran under it to catch it for the first out. The runner on second took off for third thinking there was two outs. There was not. After the catch Mitchell froze and had to think about his next move. Luckily all of Mesa was yelling at him to touch the bag at second for the force. That would be too easy so Mitchell flipped to Rushton who was only five feet away for the double play. Red Sox then loaded the bases with a single and two walks to put the pressure on. Luke held strong striking out the final batter swinging.
With the game all tied up Tyrus Randall lead off with walk. He stole second on a close play to put himself in scoring position. Red Sox walked Christopher Alston to set up the force. With Aiden Ohl batting Tyrus took off for third prompting a throw from the catcher. The ball went into left field and Tyrus trotted to home for the game winning run.
